Photographer John Jobling lives in Northumberland in the North East of England. John has been interested in photography since he was a teenager. Now, that he’s 62 years old, he would say, that his real passion started, when digital photography took off in a big way. John mainly shot Landscapes, Urban Scenes and Street Art. But he also slowly became involved in photographing music gigs and bands in a big way. John shot for a couple of music magazines and the local press on ocassion.
However, John has always been interested in shooting “fashion”, but had no idea how to get started. A fellow photographer, knowing of his interest in tattoo’s and piercings, sent him some images by a local photographer, Chris Harrison, who has a big reputation around the North East of UK and was also featured by Streetfashion MagZZine. To cut a long story short, they got in touch, met up and Chris kindly allowed John, to help him behind the scenes at a model shoot. Chris also gave John some great advice - he still does - and from there John started doing his own shoots.

The North East is lucky in that there is a thriving fashion/glamour pool of people (Photographers, Models, MUA’s etc). John does the bulk of his work TFP, but will commission a model, when he’s after a certain style or look.

John often will work worth with aspiring models or people, who are not models as such, but have always wanted to be in front of a camera.  He’s slowly coming to terms with the advantages of working in a studio, but enjoys location shoots as well.
He is happy shooting everything from Street Fashion, Urban wear, Glamour, Boudoir as well as Art Nude and lingerie. John has even done the odd fetish shoot. He must admit his favourite subject is alternative work. John just loves shooting a heavily inked and pierced model. He loves the art involved.

"Professional Hobbyist” is the term, he likes to think of himself.  That means, that while this is 100% his hobby and he doesn’t charge for his photoshoots apart from the odd travel costs covered, he always act as a professional would, treating anybody he works with, with respect and ensuring, they are safe at all times. Above all John wants everyone – including himself -  involved to enjoy the shoot and have some fun. Of course, hopefully get some great images too! John is very proud of his 43 positive references on PurplePort from the models, he has worked with.

a good portrait starts with a relationship

Vaughan has been a photography enthusiast for a long time, ever since receiving a Canon A1 from his father as a high school graduation gift. He enjoys landscapes and has dabbled in macro, but portraiture is his first love.

Vaughan’s equipment includes a Canon 5D Mk III, a remote flash kit, various light modifiers, a softbox (StudioPro) and backdrop for his studio, and an assortment of lenses, to include his favorite portrait lens, the EF 85mm 1.2L II.

His  inspiration  is  multifaceted.  Vaughan  is  a  student   of   the   art   and   loves   to  experiment  with
new techniques. He reads about in books and online. Vaughan finds inspiration in nature and in the ways, humans interact with it. But his primary inspiration during a shoot is always the model. His models come to a shoot with vastly different personal stories. Many are camera-shy, or don't believe that they are beautiful. It's Vaughan’s job to capture a glimpse of who a person really is. This takes time, because a good portrait starts with a relationship. He has to find a way to bond with his model to earn their trust.

Picture
He’s   inspired    by   this   challenge,   and    by   the   chance   to   create   something   truly   special.  It  is
Picture
extremely gratifying to show a self-doubting model a beautiful photo of themselves, and to see a new realization emerge on their face - an awakening to the reality that they are beautiful after all. Being able to see that light turn on in someone's eyes - that's what keeps Vaughan going.

the combination of expressive faces and natural background get a certain ‘sound’

Sarah, the photographer, we like to introduce you, is living in the Uckermark in the north eastern part of Germany. She’s 21 years old and an aspiring teacher.

She always did a lot of testing with digital cameras, but three years ago Sarah bought her first DSLR and began to consciously work with manual settings and natural light. Mainly she initially took pictures of her best friend, her boyfriend and family. As some of them have set their photos online, there came a lot  of  positive
feedback and so Sarah started trying to set up her own page on Facebook.

During her student days in Rostock she then submitted a request in a university community and since then she has worked with several students on tfp basis. Since Sarah stopped her studies and came back home in the Uckermark, the number of sessions has unfortunately been drastically reduced. So it was, that she began increasingly to take pictures of herself in order to continue to live out her hobbies. Sarah also has learned a lot about herself, because photos allow you to take a look on yourself from a distance.

Her favorite area is portrait photography, preferably outdoors. Sarah is a very nature-loving person and loves to express emotions in her photos. She thinks, that her photos with the combination of expressive faces and natural background get a certain ‘sound’.

Since she’s doing a social year in playschool, Sarah has developed a passion for children photography. She loves the natural and honest way, children behave in front of the camera. Unfortunately she could not yet do not publish pictures of it.

Sarah’s equipment is a Canon 1100D with a 50mm f1.8 fixed focal length lens and a 4in1 reflector. However, Sarah is of the opinion, that photography is  not  necessarily  technic  driven,  but  rather  to
play with the look, that you have for the overall picture and the way, you interprete it. For her self-portraits she also has a tripod and a remote trigger.

Recently Sarah also wants to go increasingly into the model direction. “It's a good opportunity to express feelings, develop myself, to socialize and learn something new even for me. Because I want to learn about how it is to stand in front of the camera, to be able to put myself so perfectly as possible into my models.”

the ability to immortalize beauty

The parents of photographer Adriano Bonfim, Edna (in memoriam) and Antonio Bonfim, did a wonderful thing in his first year of life. They made a photo a day, a photographic chronicle. Today, with so much technology, this is normal. In 1978 it was an act of love and selflessness. And it was the sound of the shutter clicks Adriano grew up with.

Already in adulthood, he was a student of the great master Fernando Seixas, Carioca, who made     many     works     for    major     magazines,
including Playboy. Adriano made photos of sport, landscapes, cars in auto shows, until he reach the great passion: sexy.

The great mystery to shoot someone, who may be dressed from head to toe and still convey sensuality with a look, fascinated him.

The ability to immortalize beauty, that is transitory and causes sensations in the viewer, led him into this world.

Adriano prefers shooting in contrasting locations. Warehouses, abandoned buildings, plants, changing rooms, workshops. Inhospitable places, where you  normally  would
Picture
not see any woman, are the locations, at which Adriano is taking his photos.

Fries straatfestival 2014, Leeuwarden

After a ‘break’ of about 30 years photographer Johan Hiemstra of Frieslandfotografie
, based in Heerenveen in the Netherlands, has started photographing again in 2013. His source of inspiration has always been Anton Corbijn. That’s why he likes black and white photography so much and why he learned Lightroom to convert his pictures to black and white. Most of Johan’s pictures come straight out of the camera without any editing.

Johan’s photo equipment is a Nikon D5200 and a Tamron 70-300MM lens. That’s all, he needs, to take his fabulous photos.

He started with landscape photography as many others, but except of a few pictures it was not very satisfying for him.

A friend of Johan told him, that there would be a street festival in Leeuwarden and he should go there to make some pictures. And so Johan did.

Then he discovered a photo contest and applied with some of his photos. Right away he was lucky and got a wild card. So he had to face the jury of the contest. Corbino
, the brother of Anton Corbijn, was in the jury. He told Johan, that he was impressed by his work. Corbino could see by Johan’s photos, that he had been photographing for a long time. As Johan told him,   that  he  started   just  4   months  ago  with
Picture
photography, Corbino couldn’t believe it. Finally Johan became 2nd in the competition.

From this moment on Johan knew, street photography is the kind of photography, he likes most. So when he got the opportunity to go to an event, he stayed there the whole day and came back with 1 or 2 thousands of pictures. Mostly there are around 50 images left from such a shoot. The next event, you can meet Johan, will be the Fries straatfestival
in Leeuwarden on the 30th of May.

Picture
Besides street photography Johan also captures impressions of  basketball matches and the events of Basketball Vereniging Dyna75 in Heerenveen. According to Johan basketball is one of the most difficult sports to photograph. After years of practice he switched finally from automatic to manual. This improved his work a lot. You can see his work on Basketball  on the dyna24 Flickr-stream and all other photos on his streetphotography Flickr-stream.

photographers create memories

with this feature we like to introduce you to a young and upcoming photographer from Brazil.

Picture
Bruno Queiroz says of himself, that he basically photographs, what he sees. He’s just 16 years old and lives in Contagem, near Belo Horizonte in the province of  Minas Gerais, Brazil. Bruno is still at school, but it’s his last year. Bruno says: „The most beautiful thing about photography is, that we, as photographers, see the beauty in the uncommon and at unimaginable places. We create memories, and that's what i always try to do. My work is based in everything that i find beauty in.“

His inspirations Bruno takes from everywhere. He’s never been one of those, who find inspiration in some photographer, specially, but in all of them, in different photos. He’s not attached to their names, but to their photography. His inspiration is in the musics he listens to, they come from his friends, the movies he’s watching, the nature, the moon. Basically, as the sentence says, "Life imitates art"

Lighting is the most important thing in his sessions

Our current feature is dedicated to photographer Ismael M. Lopez, who is based in Algeciras in the south of Spain.

Ismael discovered photography by accident as in 2012 a friend gave him an "old" Nikon d70s as a present. He didn't had a clue about how it works, so decided to look for a camera manual on the internet.

Luckily he found an article about the D70s in a website   about   lighting,   www.strobist.com.   In
the   internet   Ismael  could  learn,  how
  to  light
properly, using small and inexpensive flashes. It was an amazing discovery and from that moment until now photography and lighting goes hand in hand for him.

After reading a lot about lighting, Ismael started to practice shooting some friends in a tiny space in his living room. At the beginning he was scared to work with unknown people.

Although he loves his "home studio", it was very limiting. So he soon moved outdoors to shoot portraits and fashion.

Ismael was influenced by a lot of photographers, but got influenced most by Joanna Kustra and Emily Soto.

Picture
Nowadays Ismael tries to improve his skills every day. Lighting is the most important thing in his sessions and he normally uses dramatic lighting (Rembrant, short lighting, under exposing the ambient) and shallow depth of field."

If you like to see more of Ismael’s fantastic photos, you can take a look at his Flickr-Stream or at his 500px portfolio.

My poetry is not expressed in words, but rather, in images

In this feature we like to introduce to you the work and person of Francisco Alvarado León, who is a professional photographer, working in documental, landscape, portrait and air photography.

“My poetry is not expressed in words, but rather, in images” are the words of photographer Francisco, born in 1983 in Ambato, Ecuador in the south of Quito, Ecuadors capital, where he is living and working today.

Francisco  describes   himself  as  a   hunter  of   images,  searching  for   the  majesty   of  light   and  the
presence of beautiful composition, and in that moment, when everything comes together just right, it is all written with a click. It sounds so easy, but if you look at Franciscos photos, you might guess, how much experience you need, to capture these photos with just a click.
Although he is continuously learning and practicing the newest techniques in digital photography, Francisco prefers analog photography, because of the romance, which analog photography embodies. He truly believes, that good photography is not produced on a computer, but rather in a  precise
Picture
moment in time. Photography is an art of time, light and composition and Francisco tries to limit digital editing and modification, since the merit and beauty resides in capturing the magic of the moment.

He takes pictures with the minimum possible Equipment

Miguel Moya’s main job is graphic designer, but he also works as photographer besides this.

There are a lot of photographers, that influenced his style and the way he ‚lives’ photography. Most of them are very recent and coming from the digital era, but he can’t forget his best influencer. Not only for her job, but for the way, she lived photography: Julie Margaret Cameron.

She started taking pictures at 40 years and had an   energy,    that    couldn’t    stop    shooting    to
everything that crossed her eyes. She hated technology and needed to put her soul in every picture. This is the reason, why Miguel loves her most of all of his influencers.

Miguel doesn’t need expensive cameras, lenses and other equipment. He takes pictures with the minimum possible and getting the highest possible results. This is a rule in his pictures.

He started taking landscape pictures a few years ago, but looking at these photos, he realized, that there was something missing in it ... the human presence. This was changing his focus to portrait photography and currently especially to women portraits, were he finds elegance and beauty.

A good lightning and a maximum corporal expression is, what Miguel puts all his efforts in. His goal is, to catch the eye of the observer and keep it on his picture forever…

Thanks to his father Mai Xuan Vu got in touch with photography

Vietnamese photographer Dennis Mai (Mai Xuan Vu) is not a professional. For him photography is passion and one of his hobbies.
Picture
Mai Xuan Vu graduated as a Bachelor of Commerce from RMIT and Australian International University in Vietnam. He was born and is living in Saigon. Currently he is working as a business consultant for foreign companies in the pharmaceutical trading industry in Vietnam. He also is an Apple Hardware technician and mobile network administrator. Mai Xuan Vu is operating a small service called M-SolutionTM.
Besides this he has a photographer team called VHD. They do fashion shoots, wedding photography and yearbooks for students.

Thanks to his father Mai Xuan Vu got in touch with photography quite early in his life. Like Mai Xuan Vu, his father is not a professional photographer, but he got a big love, a heart in photography. He started his passion since the early 1980s with his first gear cam ZENITH kit 50 from Russia and a German wide 28 mm lens. He also developed films by himself in dark room to save costs during  the economic crisis period in the 80’s.

Mai Xuan Vu’s father also was the one, who gave him the first lesson about photography. It did not take long for to learn how to work with a camera "as it was already in his blood".

Mai Xuan Vu bought his first gear by himself (Canon 600D, kit 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 and fit 50 f1.8) in 2013, when he traveled to United States and still has this gear until now. He plans to upgrade to Sony full frame A7 Mark ii kit and Zeiss 55 f1.4.and full range soon. At a semi-professional level with advanced photoshop   image  processing   techniques  Mai
Picture
Xuan Vu would be excited to extend his level to a professional photographer.

Picture
He loves to work with young models, "because they have so much energy, beauty and creativity". He has a lot of favorite subjects in shooting, as there are street life, people portrait in different places, fashion shoot, city at night at high position, long exposure shots, sexy in house shoot, underwear and bikini shoots, haft nude art, wedding and event photography.
