By looking through the web we discovered a photo of her and then had a look at her Facebook page. We were immediately impressed by her appearance in front of the camera and asked her for an interview. Lucky as we are, she agreed and here we go to introduce you up and coming model Sharon Joyce, based in The Netherlands. Sharon, please tell us a little bit about yourself to begin with. (How old are you, Where were you born and where do you live now, What is your profession and do you have other besides modeling? Hi, my name is Sharon Joyce, I am 20 years old and I live in Groningen in The Netherlands. This is also where I was born. I am not planning to stay here my whole live.. would love to move to London or something like that. I believe that your life is way too short to stay at one place your whole life. Next to my modelling job I study artist! I would love to act, dance, sing in musicals. My study is very important for me. |
What do you love most about modelling?
I love the fact that when I stand in front of the camera I become a whole other person. I transfer in the person who I need to ‘ act’, because modelling is also some way of acting. It's also that I was really unconfident about myself. Was bullied for a very long time and had some rough times. when I stand in front of the camera I feel confident because I kinda know what I’m doing. I can totally reset my thoughts and just focus on what I am doing right now. This way it will never feel like im ‘ working’ but just some kind of relaxation.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Pfoe, difficult question, had a lot of highlights last year! I love working for an erotic calender in a beautiful hotel in the biggest room or all the awesome hair assignments I had… its too much to remember!
Tell us about some of your recent shoots. Last shoots were a lot of hair assigments and sexy erotic shoots. I love this subject. I know how to pose this way and that feels good! I’m also a workshop model. This is also something I did a lot last shoots. Work a lot with Toonen & Wientjens and Frank Doorhof as a workshop model. |
What really goes on behind the scenes as a model?
Haha, of course, I won't be the first one who says ‘I’ts a hard world’. And of course it is! You have to make sure, that you keep in shape, workout and eat healthy. But mostly it's a lot of fun and there is always a great feeling on the set. It also depends on if you are the only model or if there are more models and if it’s a big job for a big magazine or just freestyle and for fun. When there are more models and it’s a big paid job, you’re mostly much longer in the makeup, clothing, hair than the photoshoot takes itself. You also have to make sure, that you have the right picture in about 10 clicks. So your time is short. This way you have to work under a lot of pressure. You need to handle this.
Which photographers in the industry do you most enjoy working with?
I work a lot with Martin Bierman, he became a good friend of mine and we are an awesome team, will never get tired of working with him.
I also love working with Mark de Roo, Toonen & Wientjens, William Aponno and John Bouma. They are all great photographers and when we work together, we just know what we both want. This way we make the best pictures.
Define your personal style.
My own style? Like.. clothing style? I like to stand out. Be a bit different than the rest. One of my things to remember as a model is my short hair (and mostly it's in a lot of different colors because of the hair jobs, haha). I like tattoo’s and piercings, but for now… I just keep it with 1 tattoo and 3 piercings because of my modelling job. My clothing style is also a bit different, I like all kinds of crazy socks and have kind of a ‘90s style’. Who would you say is your 'style muse'? I have a big crush on Ruby Rose. I think she is absolutely stunning and I love the way she just doesn’t care about what other people think. Her style is just amazing! Your favourite designer is… ? To be honest.. I don’t have a favourite designer. I think… I am the type of girl who likes to go to second hand shops to take a look there. Not because I don’t have the money but just because there are a lot of beautiful things there nobody saw before. |
Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar?
Have to make a choice. Vogue is, if you ask me, a bit more high fashion, but unreachable. Their models are just too good. It's not like you would see a model like that on the streets somewhere. Haper’s Bazaar is much more reachable. Their models look more ‘real’. Normal sizes, smiling.
Is there any particular designer piece you are crushing on right now?
That shirt I saw in the second hand shop yesterday… oh wait.. that’s not an designer piece.

What do you hope to be doing in the next 5 years?
In 5 years I will be 25. I'm modelling. I hope I did a lot of editorials, some big jobs outside the Netherlands and still doing. I hope I finished my study and even did HBO and also almost finished this. But to be honest, because of my past I learned to live by the day. I am not going to worry about what will happen tomorrow or what happened yesterday. I live in the moment and I live to make myself happy. Not somebody else.
If you could be anywhere else but here, where would you go?
Definitely Australia! This is a place I already want to go my whole life. It's so beautiful and different than the Netherlands, but next to Australia there are so many places, I still want to go ... London, Portugal, Prague…
