Please tell us a little bit about yourself to begin with. (How old are you, Where were you born and where do you live now, What is your profession and do you have other besides photography?
My name is Irenee NDUWAYEZU. I am Burundian. I am 29 years old. I was born in Bujumbura (the capital of Burundi) and I still live there.
Have you been involved in the arts in some form other than photography? I am a photographer and a designer. I did communication for development at the university. I work for an NGO (CARE International) as a communicator. I am passionate about graphic design. In my hobby I sing in an amateur band. Seeing your remarkable work, I am curious where your creativity comes from? I think my creativity comes from the party that I am always looking for the emotion in the photos. |
Could you share with us how you first became interested in photography?
I always want to communicate to people a new way of seeing things, a new perceptive to show them a new vision of the world around us. I started in adolescence as a designer. The pictures that people brought me did not satisfy me at all. I started to take a lot of interest in photography. When it came to make a poster, I demanded to take the cover photo myself. It took me little by little to be very passionate about photography.

What equipment are you using now and with what did you get started?
I use as a photo equipment, a CANON 600D and I started with a CANON 1200D. My lenses are 18-55 and 75-300.
What is your favorite lens? I like to use the 18-55 because of its very varied use. Can you tell us about your work flow from the point until you showcase the developed picture? I like when I take time to take a picture. Take time to talk with the subject I'm taking pictures of, make surprise shots during the discussion with the person. Do you see a particular influence, be it a photographer or school on your work? As an NGO photographer I am attracted by the pictures full of emotions. I want to communicate to others the suffering or hope of the poorest people in our society. |
What would you say characterizes your work in comparison to other photographers?
I think the main feature of my photos is emotion. I am always looking for the perception of the feelings that emerge from the people I take in pictures.
Among your works, which is your favorite and why?
My favorite photo is the one I took with children in a village in northern Burundi. These children are from very poor families. Seeing them laugh gives hope for a better future for them.

Tell us your funniest or most awkward photography story.
The surprise photo of the children who ran towards me ... I did not have time to focus. I really liked the picture because it gave off a very beautiful emotion.
What would you tell a newcomer who asks for your advice on how to start?
As advice to people who want to get started in photography, I would tell them to take the time to learn from the great photographers' experiences. When we take a picture think about the composition, the emotion and the story behind the photos.
