Almost 4 years ago we introduced to you photographer Joe Greene in a ZZ photographer feature and after that we've published an editor's choice article with photos taken by him. We are really happy, that he now is also part of our Advent Calendar this year, again with an editor's choice article featuring model Bianca LaBounty.

I am an "old school" (65) film photographer that is now shooting totally digital. Born in West Quincy Massachusetts U.S., now living in Londonderry, New Hampshire U.S.. I am also a software engineer for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Since I am so used to shooting film, I do tend to be more meticulous in setting up shots. The model, I worked with in this shoot, Bianca LaBounty, enjoys shooting in different locations. I chose the South Shore of Boston because it is loaded with old New England ocean scenes. We had done a few shoots in New Hampshire and wanted a unique location. I also like to vary shoot locations and love shooting around stone architecture in cities. |

Bianca is an aspiring model AND photographer. Bianca is also one of those people, who can totally transform her look. She is professional, takes direction really well and has a creative mind. (She occasionally conjures up the look of an image to me and I carry out her ideas.) I do like models, who contribute to the creative process. Bianca is originally from Romania and has an exotic look, which comes across real well. She is a pleasure to work with. Great sense of humor!

I do almost all of my photography outdoors. The most important part of the plan is having good weather to shoot in. This day we had variable light and variable winds. We also brought along changes of clothes and accessories such as head jewelry, hats and scarfs. We do plan and part of the plan is to have new plans, if that makes sense. Outdoor shooting in New England is always an adventure. The weather conditions change quickly and sometimes drastically.
The recent COVID virus has influenced where I shoot. There are mask restrictions here in urban areas so we have been using areas that are away from the city. The South Shore location was my idea. It happened to be one of the last good beach days and I knew the area well. Lot's of marshes, beaches, old forts and lighthouses down that way. I did shoot most of this pictures using a Canon EOS R with a Canon 24 - 105 L lens. Some images may be from a Sony A7R III with a Sony 85mm GM lens. I do tend to stop down one or two stops from max aperture when I shoot. I try to shoot natural light outside, but will use flash that has been turned down 2 to 3 stops as fill light when necessary. I look for shade and open sky towards the model's face when I shoot. In the city, alleys work really well for this. I take the time to see how the light is falling on a model's face and almost always short light my subjects. |
Why ZZ Loves It
We love the way Joe combines people photography with the beautiful New England nature. It is remarkable, how he uses the camera to showcase the surrounding nature while emphazising the model in the same picture. Joe mainly uses available light and if we may say so - does that in a fascinating way! By using only natural light, the photos have a very organic look and feel to them.
Also we enjoy looking at the variety of different accessories and how Bianca uses them to to take us into completely different scenes while Joe and her are using the same surroundings.
It is a pleasure to have these two artists with us in our Advent Calendar and we like to thank photographer Joe Greene and model Bianca LaBounty for joining us on our way towards Christmas.
